Taxidermy started when the first skin was tanned by anchient man. Using the Brains,Ash,Certian Tree Barks tanning was achived and man could stay warm in the winter and make shelters,pouches,shoes and etc from the skins. Tanners became a part of every community and village, each one had its own tannery as the tanner became a very important part of every town and village. In the 18th Century people started to want to put there tropheys on the wall for display. during this time up untill the late 19th century animals were truley stuffed, Taxidermist would litterly stuff a skin with what ever they could get there hands on,Rags,Paper,Old Clothes Etc Soon Taxidermist started taking the skeleton and wraping it with wood wool (excelsior) news papers,etc One taxidermist found news papers from 1920 in an old WT Deer Mount. Carl E Akeley was one of the people who brought taxidemy to new height's,he studied animals and there Anatomy and started makeing forms that had some realistic details to them.His two Bull Elephants fighting are still in the Field Museum of natrual History. He brought the artistic side of taxidermy to life, Putting animals in dioroama''s that brought the life back to them and looked real. Modern taxidermy is far diffrent form long ago Carl E Akeley used arsenic a lot to preserve the animals he mounted where now a days the chemicals are far less dangerous. Taxidermy has went from stuffing a preserved skin to a highly detailed art form in its self. |
